The death of journalist Basavaraj Kanakond in Karnataka’s Bagalkot, initially believed to be a road accident, has been confirmed as murder allegedly linked to blackmail over an illegal rice supply racket, police said on Saturday. Bagalkot police have apprehended three individuals in connection with the case.

Kanakond died on 8 October after his scooter was hit by an unidentified vehicle near Madarkhandi Cross in Jamakhandi taluk. The incident, first treated as an accident, came under scrutiny after his wife filed a complaint, prompting police to reopen the probe.

Kanakond had reportedly collected proof about an illegal rice network. Rather than publishing the story, he allegedly began blackmailing the implicated individuals, police said.

Ten days after he went missing, the body of journalist Rajeev Pratap Singh was recovered from a barrage in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Sunday.

Superintendent of Police Sarita Dobhal said the postmortem report was awaited to confirm the cause of death. “Prima facie, his car fell into a gorge and into the river, which had swelled during the time of the incident. We had found CCTV footage from a few minutes before the incident, showing him alone in the car,” she told The Indian Express.

Pratap, 36, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, ran a Facebook page called Delhi Uttarakhand Live, which focused on local issues. His family has alleged that he had received multiple threats to take down his recent reports.

In a tragic incident, a journalist was killed brutally by some miscreants on Saturday night. The incident happened in Muraliguda village under Motu police limits in Malkangiri district.

The deceased has been identified as Ch. Naresh. He was working in a web portal there.

According to information, last night two people and two other journalists and Naresh were talking in their village. At this time, 5 miscreants came in two bikes and attacked him by a sword.

The miscreants attacked them and grabbed his car keys. Naresh and the other injured were rushed to the Motu primary health centre. He was later referred to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).

However, he breathed his last despite efforts by doctors to cure him. Investigation is underway.

The Punjab Police have cracked the blind murder case of 30-year-old social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, popularly known as Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, with the arrest of two nihangs who allegedly killed her as part of a “moral policing” act.

Kanchan was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside her car parked outside Adesh University at Bhucho Kalan, along the Bathinda-Chandigarh highway, on Wednesday.

The arrested accused have been identified as Jaspreet Singh (32) of Mehron village in Moga district and Nimratjeet Singh (21) of Harike in Tarn Taran district. Both are unemployed and frequently wore nihang attire. They were arrested around 1 am on Thursday. However, the key accused, Amritpal Singh Mehron, remains absconding.

Journalist Dharmendra Singh Chauhan was shot and killed by unidentified assailants on May 18 while walking near his home in India’s northern Haryana state. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its affiliates, Indian Journalists Union (IJU) and the National Union of Journalists India (NUJ-I), call on the authorities to commence an immediate and transparent investigation into his murder and ensure journalists can work without fear of violence and intimidation.

Chauhan, a journalist affiliated with online media outlet Fast News India, was fatally shot on the evening of May 18 near his residence in Luhari village, in Haryana’s Jhajjar district. He sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to Ganesh Ji Hospital in Gurugram, where he succumbedto his injuries later that night.

The body of Shahdeb Dey, the owner of a local news channel known as ‘Republic Andaman’, was found in a field from Deshbandu Nagar in Diglipur on Tuesday, police said.

The exact motive behind the murder is under investigation but preliminary probe revealed that it happened over personal enmity involving the woman.” The SP said those arrested were identified as Gangaiyya (who runs a bar cum restaurant in Diglipur), his two staff members Rama Subramanian and Ramesh and a local woman Bitika Mallik.

“Our probe is not yet over as we are trying to get more details on the exact motive behind the murder,” she said.
