In June 2025, an FIR was lodged against journalist Nandakumar TP under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for offences of outraging a woman’s modesty, intimidation and intent to cause reputational harm, and dissemination of obscene content electronically. He was also booked under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act that penalises publication or transmission of obscene material in electronic form.

The State Police had alleged that a YouTube video posted by the journalist contained derogatory, sexually coloured, and threatening remarks aimed at humiliating and tarnishing the reputation of the woman leader.

The Kerala High Court on June 9 declined to grant Nandakumar anticipatory bail and directed him to surrender before the police.

Supreme Court issues notice to Kerala government on journalist Nandakumar T.P.’s plea for bail

The Supreme Court on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) issued notice to the Kerala government on a plea for pre-arrest bail filed by journalist Nandakumar T.P., who was booked by the police for allegedly publishing a defamatory video against a prominent woman politician on his YouTube channel Crime Online.

A Vacation Bench headed by Justice Sandeep Mehta sought a response from the State and the station house officer of the police station.

Posting the case after six weeks, the Bench said that in case of any coercive action by the police in the meanwhile, the journalist would be released on bail upon signing a bond and producing the required number of sureties as directed by the trial judge. The court asked the journalist to cooperate with the investigation.
