Censorship

Recent developments in Auroville, an experimental township near Puducherry, have involved significant allegations of censorship and top-down control by the Auroville Foundation Office (AVFO), which is appointed by the Government of India. Since 2021, the community has been deeply divided over the rapid implementation of a “master plan” that involves clearing trees and constructing roads, leading to tensions between the administration and residents.

Allegations of Censorship and Communication Control

Reports and testimonies from residents describe a systematic takeover of communication platforms within the community, which some call “censorship”:
• Auronet Takeover: The community’s primary internal online communication platform, Auronet, was taken over by the AVFO in June 2022, leading to the deletion of comments and blocking of access for residents opposing the administration.
• Email Access: The administration gained control over @auroville.org.in email addresses, including private inboxes, leading to accusations of monitoring, according to the Auroville Media Liaison.
• Media and Publications: OutreachMedia, a group managing external PR, was dismantled, and the community publication News&Notes was taken over, forcing residents to publish an independent, uncensored edition, the site states.
• Suppression of Dissent: Residents report that those who question the development activities or voice concerns about environmental damage face intimidation, removal of volunteer status, and visa threats.
