Attacks – Journalists

During the People’s Tribunal on Assam press conference at the Constitution Club of India, Hindu Sena members stormed the venue, shouting “Jai Shri Ram” slogans and disrupting the event for nearly 10 minutes. The speakers—Harsh Mander, Justice Iqbal Ansari, and Wajahat Habibullah—faced verbal threats. The conference focused on the unregulated and targeted evictions of Muslims in Assam. FOEJ reporters, present on-site, spoke with Hindu Sena president Vishnu Gupta, who called the event a “conspiracy to take down the Assam government.” This disruption follows recent remarks by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, who threatened action against journalists and activists covering the demolitions. Sarma also controversially stated he would “send” Jamiat President Mahmood Madani to Bangladesh, raising serious concerns of communal targeting.
