Arrests – Journalists

The arrest of a digital media journalist in Assam for allegedly abusing an unnamed tribal person while trying to question the managing director of a cooperative bank over corruption charges has triggered outrage.
A section of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was slapped on Dilwar Hussain Mozumder after he reportedly tried to question a cooperative bank’s managing director during a protest by a political party’s youth wing.
Several media bodies, including the Press Club of India (PCI), the Gauhati Press Club, and the Assam Women Journalists’ Forum, condemned digital media reporter Dilwar Hussain Mozumder’s arrest and demanded his release. They said the arrest of a journalist for performing his duty was “deeply concerning” and urged the authorities to uphold press freedom.
