Editor of Chhattisgarh-based Bhumkal Samachar, Kamal Shukla has alleged that he was attacked in Kanker for filing RTIs against the accused and reporting on the sand mafia.

The matter in question refers to a police complaint filed by Kamal Shukla, the editor of Bhumkal Samachar. In his statement to the police, Shukla said he was assaulted and threatened by local Congress workers in Kanker town on Saturday. Among the accused are Jitendra Singh Thakur, former president of Kanker Nagar Palika, local journalist Ganesh Tiwari, corporator Shadaab Khan and Gaffar Memon, a representative of local Congress MLA Shishupal Shori. All of the four were arrested on Saturday on the basis of Kamal Shukla’s police complaint.

A video of the incident showing Kamal Shukla being thrashed in full public view by the accused not far from a police station is being widely circulated on social media. In his statement, the complainant also alleged that Gaffar Memon even pointed a gun at him before waving it in the air. Shukla claims he is being attacked for filing RTIs against the accused and reporting on the sand mafia in Chhattisgarh. I will continue to do my job, he told media outlets following the incident.
