The Supreme Court has posted the bail application filed by journalist Siddique Kappan for final disposal on September 9, 2022.
The apex court issued notice on the petition filed by Kappan, challenging the rejection of his bail application by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Aug 2. The bench comprised Chief Justice UU Lalit and Justice Ravindra Bhat.
Kappan was arrested on Oct 5, 2020, when he was on his way to Hathras in Uttar Pradesh to cover the brutal gangrape and murder of a young Dalit woman. He was booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967. In February 2021, the Supreme Court granted Kappan five days’ bail to enable him to visit his 90-year-old mother, Khadeeja Kutty, who was bedridden and ailing. She passed away in June 2021.
